As part of the BBC world Service, Diloram has been involved in a number of projects on journalism training. These would be on the procedures for creating sustainable media platforms which give marginalised or vulnerable groups the opportunity to voice their concerns and access alternative opinions. This goal will be achieved through support for TV dramas with socially-responsible content; through participatory radio programmes addressing local communities; and through interactive vehicles for social messaging on the Internet. This approach will ensure that the project can engage with diverse audiences. The radio component of the training involves developing the skills of journalists in the field of participatory or debate-based programming. The aim is to help produce programmes which act as an interface between communities and local governments. These programmes will give citizens the chance to question local officials about service provision and policy implementation. This process will help to improve public accountability and responsiveness. We can provide more detailed information on our projects, where for example we intend to work with regional radio stations on developing general journalistic skills and on working with them on the development of a call-in programme. The work will therefore involve a week at each of the radio stations of general journalistic skills, and three week of training sessions on package-making and production of the programme.
